ARTIST STATEMENT

In my multidisciplinary art practice, I use acrylic painting, collage, sculpture, sound, poetry, performance and installation. My work is characterized by bold forms, bright colours, and ancient symbols from many cultures. My art is informed by personal experience, the histories of my people and by Black Feminism, Afrofuturism and Afro-Surrealism all of which are movements for the liberation of all people from all forms of oppression.

In my work I combine concepts from my cultural heritages as a Jamaican of primarily African heritage and as a Canadian of Jamaican heritage. Bringing all these cultural influences to bear in my work is a way of honouring both my ‘homes’, all my Ancestors and all my Relations.

I have arrived at this place not through perfection but from forging through the fire of my own imperfections to find my own truth. What I have learned is the gift from my heart that aims to remind you of what you already know is true, to present new ideas, and to offer building blocks that we can use to create a better world today and in the future. Through this work I strive to speak across cultures, engage conversation and effect a sense of oneness within community.

If when you meet the stories in the art, you see a small part of yourself, you find a space for contemplation and self-reflection, you feel strength, peace, joy, beauty, then the work has accomplished its role. Let the art invite you to move beyond the illusion of separateness to realize that we are so much more the same than we are different.
